Astellas is expanding its biopharmaceutical manufacturing facility at Kerry Technology Park in Tralee with a second aseptic filling line, a move that will double the site’s drug-product manufacturing capacity and strengthen Ireland’s position in advanced pharmaceutical production. Cleanroom Technology reported the expansion on 14 September.

The project represents the next phase of development at Astellas’ Tralee facility and will include the new filling line alongside associated manufacturing infrastructure. The expansion builds on the facility’s March 2024 groundbreaking and is expected to create additional highly skilled positions across engineering, production, quality, logistics and support functions by 2029.

Astellas is a global biopharmaceutical company developing and manufacturing medicines across areas including oncology, immunology, neuroscience and women’s health. Its Tralee operation forms part of the company’s international manufacturing network and is focused on drug-product manufacturing, rather than active pharmaceutical ingredient production.

The facility is designed to support technically demanding processes including compounding, sterile aseptic filling and lyophilisation. Increasing capacity in these areas is significant for pharmaceutical manufacturers as demand grows for complex medicines requiring controlled and highly regulated production environments.

The expansion builds on Astellas’ original investment of approximately €330 million in the Tralee manufacturing facility, announced in 2023. The site covers approximately 17,000 square metres of floor area, with a building footprint of around 7,300 square metres on a 45-acre site. The original investment was designed to expand Astellas’ capacity and capabilities for aseptic drug products and reinforce the supply of its medicines. Astellas previously described the Tralee project as part of its strategy to strengthen its global manufacturing network.

Importantly, the €330 million figure relates to the original facility investment. Astellas has not disclosed a separate financial value or floor area for the newly announced second filling line and associated infrastructure. The expansion is supported by the Irish Government through IDA Ireland.

The additional capacity also has implications for Ireland’s pharmaceutical manufacturing skills base. The expected roles across engineering, production, quality and logistics reflect the specialist expertise required to operate advanced aseptic manufacturing facilities and maintain their highly controlled production environments.

For the sector, the Tralee expansion demonstrates the continued investment required to scale pharmaceutical manufacturing while maintaining the technical and quality standards associated with sterile drug production. For Ireland, increasing aseptic capacity also reinforces the country’s role as a strategic location within global biopharmaceutical supply chains.
