Looking back at the Life Sciences Industry Awards 2026, held on 28th May at the Crowne Plaza Hotel, Santry, Delcath Systems claimed the Patient Impact Award, a recognition that placed the company's CHEMOSAT drug delivery platform among the most clinically significant innovations celebrated at this year's programme.
Delcath Systems is an interventional oncology company whose work addresses one of the most difficult challenges in cancer care: treating primary and metastatic liver tumours effectively while minimising the harm that high-dose chemotherapy can cause to the rest of the body. Its CHEMOSAT platform was developed specifically to meet that challenge, and the underlying approach represents a meaningful departure from conventional systemic chemotherapy.
CHEMOSAT delivers whole-organ therapy, directing high-dose melphalan directly to the liver during a minimally invasive procedure. What makes the Delcath Systems approach particularly significant is what happens next: before the blood returns to the patient's systemic circulation, the chemotherapy is filtered out. This combination of targeted delivery and active filtration allows clinicians to expose the liver to therapeutic doses that would not be tolerable systemically, while limiting the broader side-effect burden that patients with advanced liver cancer already carry.
For patients facing primary or metastatic liver tumours, that distinction is not a technical detail. It represents the difference between a treatment that is clinically viable and one that may not be, and in some cases, the difference between having a treatment option at all.
The judging panel's decision to award Delcath Systems the Patient Impact Award at the Life Sciences Industry Awards 2026 reflects the directness and clarity of the clinical benefit at the centre of the company's mission. In a field where innovation is often incremental, CHEMOSAT represents a targeted, patient-centred approach that the life sciences community has recognised as genuinely impactful.
Stay tuned for the Life Sciences Industry Awards 2027 cycle, where Ireland's most innovative life sciences organisations will once again have the opportunity to showcase their contributions to the sector.
