Galen has launched Galsana, a new global brand for its specialist medical nutrition business, creating a platform for international expansion and future innovation in rare metabolic diseases.

Galen is a Craigavon-headquartered pharmaceutical company and member of the Almac Group, with a heritage dating back to 1968. The business operates internationally across specialist healthcare markets, while Galsana brings its rare metabolic disease portfolio together under a single global identity. The announcement was reported by Northern Ireland World.

The brand was unveiled at the SSIEM Annual Symposium in Helsinki, a major international conference focused on inherited metabolic disorders. Galsana brings together specialist products for the dietary management of conditions including phenylketonuria, maple syrup urine disease, tyrosinemia and urea cycle disorders.

The development follows Galen's acquisition of POA Pharma in 2020, which expanded its presence across the Nordic region and Northern Europe. The new identity provides a platform for bringing Galen and POA Pharma's medical nutrition products together as the business develops its international offering.

For pharmaceutical companies operating in specialist markets, the launch highlights how portfolio management and international commercial strategy can work together. A dedicated global identity can give a specialised product portfolio greater consistency across markets while supporting future product development and partnerships.

The development also reflects a patient-focused approach to medical nutrition. Galen says its team has listened closely to patients and dietitians to understand the challenges associated with rare metabolic conditions and develop formulations aimed at addressing those needs.

Galsana's launch also has a wider significance for Northern Ireland's life sciences sector. Galen says the new brand is intended to create opportunities for international partnerships and long-term investment, while strengthening its position in rare metabolic diseases.

Galen's international footprint provides further context. The company has established product sales in 25 countries and describes itself as a privately owned pharmaceutical business with its global headquarters in Craigavon.

For the sector, the lesson is clear: specialist pharmaceutical growth increasingly depends on combining product expertise, international market access and patient-led innovation. Galsana gives Galen a dedicated global identity for its medical nutrition portfolio while creating a platform for further development in rare metabolic diseases.
