Dunbar Pharma’s UK launch marks another step in the international expansion of Ireland’s specialist pharmaceutical manufacturing and API production capabilities.

Athlone-based Dunbar Pharma has brought its plant-derived dronabinol active pharmaceutical ingredient (API) to the UK through an agreement with IPS Pharma, extending the Irish manufacturer’s reach into another regulated European pharmaceutical market.

Dunbar Pharma is an Irish pharmaceutical manufacturer based in Athlone, specialising in plant-derived cannabinoid APIs. Its facility operates under EU GMP requirements and HPRA oversight, with manufacturing, testing, stability and research capabilities supporting pharmaceutical-grade production.

IPS Pharma is a UK pharmaceutical service provider and licensed Specials manufacturer. Under the arrangement, it will use Dunbar’s dronabinol API in oral capsules, oral sprays and oily dropper solutions supplied through the UK’s regulated Specials pathway.

The commercial significance extends beyond the individual product. Dunbar is demonstrating how Ireland’s established pharmaceutical manufacturing infrastructure can support specialised API production for international markets. The company manufactures its WaterClear THC product at commercial scale in Athlone, with validated processes and batch traceability designed to support regulated pharmaceutical supply.

The UK launch also represents a further stage in Dunbar’s European expansion. The company entered the German market earlier in 2026, meaning its Irish-manufactured API is now being supplied into two major European markets. Enterprise Ireland has supported Dunbar as a high-potential start-up, with the company positioning international market access as part of its growth strategy.

From an Irish manufacturing perspective, the development highlights the value of specialised GMP infrastructure in emerging pharmaceutical categories. Producing a chemically defined API under pharmaceutical quality systems requires investment in process controls, validation, testing, stability programmes and traceability, creating capabilities that can be applied across international supply arrangements.

The partnership also illustrates the importance of connecting Irish manufacturing capacity with established pharmaceutical distribution and formulation networks. Rather than requiring Dunbar to establish a complete downstream operation in the UK, the arrangement with IPS Pharma provides an established route into the country's regulated Specials market.

That model can support further internationalisation for specialist Irish manufacturers. As pharmaceutical markets become increasingly focused on consistent quality, regulatory compliance and dependable supply, manufacturers with validated domestic infrastructure can use partnerships to enter new jurisdictions without replicating their entire operational footprint.

The development comes as Dunbar continues to build its position within Ireland’s life sciences ecosystem. The company was recently recognised as Emerging Company of the Year at the 2026 BioPharmaChem Impact Awards, while its UK expansion adds another commercial milestone to its development.

For the sector, the lesson is clear: Ireland’s pharmaceutical advantage is not limited to large-scale multinational manufacturing. Specialist domestic producers with GMP infrastructure, validated processes and international partnerships can also build export-oriented capabilities around highly regulated and technically demanding pharmaceutical products. Dunbar’s expansion into the UK demonstrates how that infrastructure can create new routes to international markets.
