Ireland’s leading pharmacy network McCabes Pharmacy has rolled out a company-wide digitisation strategy, improving operational efficiency, auditing, and stock monitoring across its 110 locations, as reported by Retail Systems.

The initiative included the implementation of SafetyCulture’s workplace operations platform, which replaced manual twice-daily fridge temperature recordings with 24/7 sensor-based monitoring. The technology has already saved more than 3,000 staff hours and protected hundreds of thousands of euros worth of medication.

Jan Pieter Hallema, managing director at McCabes Pharmacy, said: “This has been a transformative way of working for us. Linking all our stores through one platform means we can spot trends, track resolution times, and improve our quality of service for every patient. In terms of asset monitoring, we can see straight away which fridges need fixing or replacing if the temperature goes out of range. Each fridge could be stocking as much as €30,000 worth of medication, so the potential loss across 110 sites is massive.”

The platform has also enhanced auditing and compliance by consolidating paper- and email-based processes into one system. Issues are now immediately visible to managers, allowing actions to be assigned and addressed in real time.

Beyond compliance, the system supports major projects, such as rebranding 80 stores to align all pharmacies under the McCabes name, and streamlines internal communications with one-to-many alerts to colleagues’ devices. Plans are underway to expand the platform to office support functions, extend asset monitoring, and enhance analytics capabilities.

The platform is already deployed in thousands of UK and Irish businesses across retail, logistics, hospitality, and manufacturing, including Card Factory, Dunelm, and JD Sports.
