Since its launch in 2023, the programme has provided an accessible, online gateway into modern biopharmaceuticals and personalised medicine. Following strong demand, expressions of interest are now open for the 2026 intake.

The 8-week, Level 8 online programme introduces learners to the science and manufacturing behind today’s biological medicines, as well as tomorrow’s advanced therapies. 

It is designed for both newcomers to the sector and experienced professionals looking to expand their understanding of emerging innovations such as gene and cell therapies, personalised medicines, and next-generation vaccines.

Delivered entirely online, the programme covers:

  • Core principles of molecular and cellular biology

  • Large-scale manufacturing processes and accessible industry terminology

Module BC5007 is divided into two parts:

  • Part 1: Design and manufacture of protein biopharmaceuticals, including regulated upstream and downstream processes
  • Part 2: Future medicines, covering gene and cell therapies, advanced vaccines, and emerging concepts explained in accessible terms

Practical Details

The programme is delivered at NFQ Level 8 and runs over a period of 8 weeks, commencing in 2026. Classes are held online, one evening per week, with recordings available to support flexible learning. The full course fee is €1,250, with a subsidised rate of €875 applied in 2025; subsidies for 2026 may vary.

Entry Requirements and Funding

Applicants require an NFQ Level 8 qualification, with limited places for those demonstrating significant industry experience. Funding through Skillnet is available for employer-paid or self-employed applicants, while public-sector employees and international applicants may apply directly to UCC.
